Hyperhydrosis

WHAT IS HYPERHYDROSIS?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for a condition where the nerves responsible for triggering sweat glands become overactive and cause excessive perspiration, even when it’s not needed. The problem tends to worsen with stress or nervousness.

COMMON SWEAT PROBLEMS

Hyperhydrosis has been known to cause dehydration and skin problems such as infections secondary to skin maceration. These infections can be accompanied by strong odors. In some cases, individuals may suffer from sweating profusely. This often requires them to change clothing several times a day.

WHAT CAUSES HYPERHYDROSIS EXCESSIVE SWEATING

Those who suffer from hyperhydrosis typically first notice symptoms during their adolescence or young adulthood. While genetics are believed to be contributing factors, the real underlying cause of this disorder is unknown. Severe sweating can be aggravated by stress, emotion, or exercise, but often occurs spontaneously.

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Often, the first steps towards treatment includes the use of powders and ointments. Products used can range from generic talcum or baby powder to prescription salves.

Our personalized treatments include topical solutions & Botox injections into the areas affected by excessive sweat production. Call and schedule an appointment to discuss these options in better detail.

Botox® is an FDA approved, minimally invasive treatment designed to help patients with severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) that has been inadequately managed with topical agents. The Botox® treatment is administered by tiny injections into the areas of severe sweating. Botox® therapy works by blocking the signals that stimulate the eccrine glands to produce sweat. The effects are temporary with an average duration of 6.5 months. Result duration varies depending on each individual patient. We recommend periodically having this treatment re-administered to maintain the maximum effect.
