The aging effect on hands

Have you watched in alarm as the veins and small structures in your hands slowly emerge, creating a landscape full of peaks and valleys where there was once smooth skin? There are several reasons why this happens, starting with the loss of fat in your hands.

While you may not associate fat with your hands, there is, indeed, a thin layer of it just below the surface of your skin. As you age, this fat begins to shift and disappear, largely because of the loss of structural support in your skin (more on that in a minute).

As your hands lose fat, the veins that were once hidden behind this layer begin to make their way toward the surface. At the same time, the bones and tendons in your hands become more pronounced as there’s little between them and your skin.

This loss of fat is a natural process that comes with age as your fat redistributes itself and your skin loses collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for the tone and elasticity in your skin. This loss leads to skin that’s less taut, which begets wrinkly, crepey skin, even on your hands.
