Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., and melanoma is the most serious type. At MDCS Dermatology, we emphasize the importance of regular self-checks to catch suspicious moles early. The ABCDE rule is a simple way to evaluate moles at home and identify warning signs of melanoma.

What Are the ABCDEs?

  • A – Asymmetry
One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.

  • B – Border
Edges are irregular, blurred, or scalloped.

  • C – Color
Varies in shade or includes different colors such as brown, black, red, or blue.

  • D – Diameter
Larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller.

  • E – Evolving
Changes in size, shape, color, or any new symptoms like itching or bleeding.

Why Self-Checks Matter

Monthly self-exams help you notice new or changing lesions early. Use a mirror or ask a loved one to check hard-to-see areas like the back, scalp, or behind the ears.

When to See a Dermatologist

Any mole that fits the ABCDE criteria—or just feels “off”—should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist. Carolyn Stull, MD, FAAD at MDCS Dermatology offers expert skin cancer screenings using advanced tools to detect changes early.
