Whether you’d like to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and age spots or simply restore a more uniform complexion, laser resurfacing can rejuvenate and revitalize your skin from the inside out. Here’s how it works.

If you made the most of this past summer, chances are it shows on your skin. Although days spent soaking up the sun can certainly do wonders for your vitamin D levels, they can also leave your skin a little worse for the wear. Your complexion may appear duller and less uniform than before, and you may even notice a few new lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.

Now that summer has officially ended and the shorter, cooler days of October have finally arrived, there’s no time like the present to refresh the skin you’re in.

Whether you’d like to erase fine lines, soften deep wrinkles, diminish the appearance of age spots, tighten saggy skin, or simply revitalize your complexion, laser resurfacing can rejuvenate your skin — and diminish common imperfections — from the inside out. Here’s how it works.

Laser skin resurfacing basics

Laser skin resurfacing is a quick, easy way to trade dull, dry skin for a vibrant, healthy glow, reverse the effects of skin damage, and take years off your appearance.

This simple skin renewal treatment uses a specialized applicator to deliver therapeutic light energy into the deepest layers of your skin. As these gentle energy waves heat your epidural cells from the inside out, your body responds by ramping up its production of collagen and elastin, the two main building blocks of strong, supple skin

Although collagen remodeling and elastin renewal begin as soon as your epidermal cells absorb the laser’s energy, complete skin renewal takes time. In the days and weeks following your laser resurfacing treatment, you can expect increasingly smoother, more uniform-looking skin that looks brighter, tighter, and more youthful as time goes on.

Fraxel laser resurfacing: Skin renewal from the inside out

Fraxel laser resurfacing uses nonablative technology to gently revitalize your skin from the inside out. This type of laser bypasses the top layer of your skin to target deeper tissues, without affecting the layers it passes through.

Without the need for any downtime afterwards, Fraxel laser resurfacing is a versatile treatment that can improve your complexion, reverse the effects of sun damage, and diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, and scars.

CO2 laser resurfacing: Skin renewal from the outside in

Although nonablative laser resurfacing can address a wide range of skin issues, certain skin problems are more responsive to deeper laser resurfacing techniques.

Long considered the gold standard treatment solution for optimal skin rejuvenation, fractionated carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing uses ablative technology to correct, repair, or improve deep wrinkles, loose skin, significant areas of increased pigmentation, and acne scars.

Ablative CO2 lasers deliver targeted beams of therapeutic energy into your deepest dermal layers to synthesize collagen and elastin from the inside out.

But CO2 laser resurfacing also promotes skin renewal from the outside in by uniformly ablating, or vaporizing, thin layers of surface tissue in a process that’s much like a deep chemical peel or microdermabrasion.

Although CO2 laser resurfacing fosters the kind of total skin renewal that delivers dramatic results, the process is more invasive and requires several days of postprocedural downtime to help facilitate healing and rapid rejuvenation.

Stunning results that last

Deeper CO2 laser resurfacing can deliver beautiful, long-lasting results after just one treatment, while gentle, noninvasive Fraxel laser resurfacing often produces the best results after a series of treatments.
